Harry and Meghan’s Baby Boy Joy

The birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child has been one of the most anticipated royal events in decades. After days of heightening expectation on the afternoon of Monday 6 May the Duke of Sussex broke the happy news at Windsor Castle, a short trip from the family home Frogmore Cottage: “I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy, early this morning, a very healthy boy. Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined. How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension, but we’re both absolutely thrilled. And so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there, it’s been amazing. So I just wanted to share this with everybody.”

The official announcement from Buckingham Palace gave the details of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s eighth great-grandchild: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son at 0526hrs this morning. The baby weighs 7lbs 3oz.” The news was released on social media, but tradition was maintained with footmen Stephen Kelly and Sarah Thompson bringing out the easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace, London, to add a formal touch to the occasion.

Baby Sussex’s name is of course now a source of speculation. Harry, however, confirmed the proud parents are yet to decide: “We’re still thinking about names. The baby is a little bit overdue so we’ve had a little time to think about it . . . that’s the next bit.” No less anticipated are the first images of Baby Sussex which Harry confirmed we will not have to wait long for: “But for us I think we’ll be seeing you in probably two days’ time as planned, as a family to be able to share it with you guys, and so everyone can see the baby.”
